Amara and Julia

Julia strolled through the back door of Amara’s home and into her kitchen. As she had the night of Julia’s arrival, Amara rounded to the far side of the kitchen island and leaned across the granite countertops. Her eyes narrowed as they focused on Julia, but she didn’t speak.

Julia tilted her head. “Well? You said you wanted a word. What is it?” She swallowed the rising fury directed toward the other woman. She had done this. She had set off the chain of events that were slowly killing Charlie.

Amara straightened and walked around the kitchen island tracing the countertops with her fingertip as she approached Julia. She stopped in front of Julia. Her expression had not changed; it held contempt of her own that Julia did not understand.

“Darius tells me you wish to leave.”

“Oh does he?”

Julia steeled her posture and held her ground. She didn’t like the way Amara looked at her.

“How do you expect to take care of Charlie? My best are on his care.”

“You and I both know that won’t help.”

Now Amara listed her head at an angle. “Since you arrived, I’ve been nothing but accommodating. I’ve opened my home to you and enlisted my medical team for Charlie. I thought we were bonding, Julia. Why the sudden ire directed at me? Why do you wish to go?”

Julia gritted her teeth, tension filling her posture. “Something tells me not to trust you after all.”

“Would that ‘something’ go by the name of Darius?” Amara raised her eyebrows at Julia, her expression softening. “He’s very handsome. And Charlie is slipping from you. I can imagine how lonely you must feel. I, too, have been lonely for a long time.”

She gave Julia a sympathetic look.

“You know, I still don’t quite know your history with Darius. But why is that he, who has known you for a veeeerrry long time, does not trust you? Like, at all?” Julia squared her shoulders, a challenge in her stance.

Amara’s gaze shifted away, and a humored smiled tugged at the corners of her mouth. “Darius and I”—she began, half turning away from Julia—“have a long and complicated history. He doesn’t forgive me for something that happened long ago.”

She turned with a sudden jerk back toward Julia, taking her arms in her hands and sending a swath of warmth and belonging through her. “And that is why all of this is so important to me. This is why I can’t let you guys go. Charlie needs my help, and I’m eager to give it.”

“And why is that?” Julia pushed through the comfort Amara’s touch brought, through her desire to just submit and trust her.

“Why is what?”

“Why are you eager to ‘help’ Charlie?”

Amara tightened her grip on Julia’s arms. “I’ve told you already. He’s my Phoenix.”

“But you didn’t tell me that when he dies it’s YOU who will have access to the water again. That you’re currently cut off from the source.”

The slight crack in Amara’s demeanor told Julia she’d hit a nerve. “I see Darius has done more than persuade you to leave.
